About The Course

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires training for each person who directly affects the safe and legal packaging, shipping or transportation of hazardous materials. This new self-study course, which teaches the key DOT regulatory requirements outlined in Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations, provides an important tool for meeting that training mandate.

Designed for safety managers, hazardous materials managers, and trucking industry professionals, the course is based on the top-selling book published by Government Institutes and written by Frank Spellman, Joanne Drinan, and Nancy E. Whiting, all experts in the field.

Each of the self-study course's nine lessons provides practical advice for developing and implementing a safe and compliant hazardous materials transportation program. Lesson topics include Classification of Hazardous Materials; Labeling, Placarding and Emergency Response; Packaging and Shipping; Driver Training; Controlled Substances and Alcohol Use and Testing; and more.

The course also examines function-specific training, including loading/unloading vehicles, separating and storing hazardous materials, performing pre-trip inspections, operating vehicles, and obeying the rules for vehicle attendance, parking and trip routing.

Included with the course are a number of useful student resources, including a history of DOT and hazardous materials regulations, a sample written hazardous materials communication program, a sample substance abuse policy, and a glossary of hazardous materials terms.

Students who successfully complete the Master Exam at the conlusion of the course, earn continuing education credits and a Certificate of Achievement from RTI and ABS Consulting/Government Institutes.
